If you can’t find the materials you are looking for within UWL collections, you can request them by Interlibrary Loan (ILL).

This guide is also available as plain text (PDF, 82.4 kb).

Before placing an Interlibrary Loan request

Before you place your ILL request:

How do I place my request?

You can place your ILL requests here:

Requests from borrowers who have overdue charges on their Library Account, or who have overdue items, cannot be processed.

Important information about your data

By submitting an Interlibrary Loan request via our web forms, you understand and agree to the following:

  • Web form requests for articles, book chapters, and other copies will be kept for six years plus the current year. This is a legal requirement that must be met by libraries obtaining copies for users.
  • Web form requests for books and other physical loan items will be kept for one academic year.
  • This data is processed to make sure that we are offering you the best service possible by keeping to targets and complying with policy.
  • This data will not be shared with any third parties, except in the rare case of a copyright audit, at which time it may need to be shared with an auditor.

How much does it cost?

UWL provides this service for free.

Actual costs for 2018-19 are as follows:

  • £5.70 e-copy from digital copy
  • £11.45 e-copy from print copy
  • £12.95 print copy by mail
  • £16.75 book loan

How long does it take?

Supply times for items can take between one to three weeks depending on availability, although article requests often arrive sooner.
We advise that items are requested at least two weeks before you require them.

How many requests can I make?

Your allocation is:

  • Students: 30 per year
  • UWL staff and research students: 50 per year

Requests above your allocation will incur a non-refundable charge based on the prices above.

How long can I keep my ILL?

Articles are yours to keep.

Books may be kept for up to six weeks, depending on the supplying library.

Can I renew my ILL?

Renewals are not always available and may incur charges (£5.10 per item in 2018/19. Prices increase every August.)

Please contact us well in advance of your return date if you wish to renew.

Loans may not be supplied again within two months of return.

Items returned late may incur additional charges.

I've lost my ILL

Please contact us as soon as possible if you think you have lost an ILL item.

In some instances, a replacement copy may be accepted in lieu. Where this is not possible, the British Library charges a fee of at least £174.50 (plus VAT) for lost items, including a non-returnable administration charge of £87.25 (plus VAT). This charge will be passed on to the requester.
